The flame of unification must remain lit until it becomes the main current, declared Liberal Party president Dorin Chirtoacă at a ceremony to mark the 101st anniversary of Bessarabia’s unification with Romania.

The Liberals laid flowers at the Stephen the Great statue and visited the Central Cemetery, where National Council members who proclaimed the 1918 union are buried.

“Over these 101 years we went through a number of regimes, the Tsarist one, the Bolshevik one, the Voronon regime, and now the Plahotniuc-Dodon regime. These regimes have been an obstacle in the path of our freedom, dignity, democracy and prosperity. We must continue fighting so that the sacrifice of the National Council can finally bear fruit”, declared Dorin Chirtoacă.

The Liberal leader also said that, since 1918, there have been “people with national consciousness who have led the flame of Romanianism and brought it to 2019”. “This flame must remain lit until it becomes the main current in our society,” said Dorin Chirtoacă, pleading for unity among all pro-unification forces.

In the morning and throughout the day, in front of the monument of Stephen the Great in the Public Garden, PL members and supporters have handed out tricolor ribbons and badges with the map of Romania. Beginning with 5:00 p.m. there will be a performance of patriotic music near the monument.

Bessarabia was the first province to unite with Romania by the vote of 27 March 1918 of the National Council, which culminated on 1 December 1918 with the Great Union of Alba Iulia.
