More than 400 cases started by the former Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime (CCCEC) over economic offenses were transmitted to the Ministry of the Interior and the Customs Service. Another part of the cases, including the loud ones, will be handled by the National Anticorruption Center (NAC) that replaced the CCCEC. The Center’s head Viorel Chetraru has told Info-Prim Neo that the process of transmitting the cases began in May, after the adoption of the Law on the Reformation of the CCCEC. The cases are distributed to the competent bodies in accordance with prosecutors’ decisions, depending on the constitutive elements of the offense. Those concerning smuggling and non-payment of customs duties are transmitted to the Customs Service, while those about tax evasion, swindles, forgery in documents and others to the Ministry of the Interior. As regards the employees of the CCCEC responsible for this area, Viorel Chetraru said that they will be made redundant as their posts will be liquidated. However, they will be able to take part in contests to apply for other posts in the bodies of the National Anticorruption Center. When the institution is reformed, there will remain about 350 employees of the approximately 600 of the former CCCEC. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Bogdan Zumbreanu, head of the General Investigation Division of the former CCCEC, said that 444 cases regarding economic offenses were sent to the Ministry of the Interior and one case to the Customs Service. The Prosecutor General’s Office decided that another 138 cases about economic offenses will be managed by the NAC. Among them are the loud cases concerning the raider attacks. Even if they are within the remit of the police, the prosecutors decided that their investigation will be completed by the Center. On October 1, the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime became the National Anticorruption Center and is to deal exclusively with the prevention and combating of corruption. The economic offenses will be handled by the Ministry of the Interior and the Customs Service.
