Producers estimate a harvest of 450,000 tonnes of apples this year, by 14% less than the previous year. A reduction in the amount of gathered apples is also reported in the European Union, IPN reports, referring to a press release of “Moldova Fruct” Association.
According to the quoted source, thanks to modern orchards in the Republic of Moldova, equipped with anti-hail nets and irrigation systems, it was possible to obtain a quantity of apples for export similar to that of 2023.
The Republic of Moldova exported 133,000 tonnes of apples in the 2023-2024 season, compared to 124,000 tonnes in 2022-2023. In August, the export of apples of the 2024 harvest began. In August-September, 13,000 tonnes of apples were exported.
“The Moldovan apples are distinguished by their authentic taste and special quality, which is why they are the business card of the Republic of Moldova. Thanks to the efforts of “Moldova Fruct” Association, our producers strengthen their position on the export markets,” the Association’s head Vitalie Gorinchoi stated at the 13th edition of the National Apple Festival.
Moldova grows apples on an area of 46,000 hectares.
