Lower wheat prices will not necessarily lead to lower bread prices

When the price of wheat decreases, it is normal for the prices of bread and other bakery products to fall too, said Minister of Aeroculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov, answering the question put by a journalist, IPN reports.

The minister stated the bakery companies from districts that increased bread prices last year may reduce them now that the wheat is cheaper.

“As regards SA Franzeluta, it maintained the prices at the same level though the wheat and floor grew dearer. Thus, if the price of bread is diminished, the reduction will be insignificant. Furthermore, the social bread represents one third of the production of SA Franzeluta,” he said.

Bumacov agreed that not all those for whom the social bread is intended manage to buy it. But, according to him, this is due not to the quantities produced, but to the inefficient distribution mechanism.

“The people for whom this bread is made should receive nominal compensations for it and should buy bread at the price at which all the consumers buy it. These are mainly elderly persons or persons with health problems who cannot always queue up for social bread. Thus, this bread is purchased by traders who sell it then dearer or by people living in the suburbs of Chisinau who feed the animals on it,” he stated.

The minister didn’t say when the new compensation mechanism may be worked out, but specified that this is not within the competence of the Agriculture Ministry.
