Corruption, especially upper level corruption, is a major threat to the state. This makes Moldova poorer, more vulnerable and weaker, President Maia Sandu stated in the meeting of the Board of the Security and Intelligence Service (SIS), where three were presented the institution’s report for last year and the priorities set for this year, IPN reports, quoting the presidential press service.

“In time, the SIS was used in particular cases for the benefit of narrow interests, not in the national interest. I will not tolerate such approaches. Now more than ever, we must work to restore the people’s trust in the state institutions,” said Maia Sandu.

She reiterated the principled position as regards the reformation of the institution, which she will support together with her team so that upright persons are promoted there and no one obliges them to act in breach of the law. “Moldova needs a strong, pro-active and efficient Security and Intelligence Service,” said President Sandu.

In the meeting, SIS director Alexandru Esaulenco said that among the institution’s strategic objectives for 2021 is the fight against corruption that undermines national security, especially at state institutions and in the justice sector. Special attention will be devoted to cases of smuggling, money laundering, appropriation of public funds, compromising of investment projects financed with foreign funds and also to the issues related to the Transnistrian conflict and the risks to national security.
