The Supreme Court of Justice’s decision to invalidate the election of Andrei Nastase as mayor of Chisinau means the end of democracy in the Republic of Moldova, the leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” Maia Sandu stated in the talk show “In Depth” on ProTV Chisinau channel, IPN reports.
Maia Sandu said the SCJ ruling is fully illegal, as were the judgements of the previous courts. According to her, the regime in the Republic of Moldova is fully undemocratic and dictatorial and the actions of society should start from here. “This means civic disobedience, resistance. We will discuss with the colleagues and will agree the next steps so as to inform the citizens in the country and international institutions about the situation here and to transmit to this government very clear signals that we do not tolerate this,” stated the politician.
Igor Munteanu, director of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul”, said the citizens on Monday witnessed a very dangerous thing for fragile democracies like the Republic of Moldova. According to him, the Supreme Court of Justice didn’t even examine the essence of the problem, didn’t examine the circumstances and didn’t go back to see where the election invalidation started from. “It only said that it does not validate,” he stated.
According to Igor Munteanu, the Republic of Moldova will be powerfully penalized for such antidemocratic deviations and not only financially. “I expect the next few weeks will be very tense for the country’s diplomatic service and for those who will come in contact with the European Union and the foreign partners even if it is summer now and it is the period of vacations,” he explained.
In the evening of June 25, the Supreme Court of Justice upheld the Appeals Court’s decision to not invalidate the results of the early mayoral elections held recently in Chisinau municipality.
