A man from Chișinău who was suspected of hooliganism and theft of documents took his whole family hostage. As he put up resistance, the police opened fire at him, injuring him. The man died later in the hospital, the head of the General Police Inspectorate Alexandru Pânzari stated in a press briefing, being quoted by IPN.
The official said that after two criminal cases were started against the man over hooliganism and theft of documents, the police were to carry out a search in the suspect’s apartment situated in Botanica district of Chișinău. When the police arrived at the scene, the suspect who is from Telenești, locked the door and refused to open it. From the balcony, he said he took the members of his family – two children, his wife and his mother-in-law – hostage. The man became aggressive and threatened he would kill his whole family.
Alexandru Pânzari said that given the gravity of the case, it was decided to force the apartment’s door. Two siege groups of the Special Police Brigade “Fulger” were called out. The suspect put up resistance, having a knife and a sward on him with which he attacked the police officers. One of the policemen was hurt. As a result, the police opened fire and the man was hurt. He was rushed to the Emergency Medical Assistance Institute, where he died. Neither the children, nor the two women were hurt, these being offered psychological assistance.
According to the police, the man was earlier tried for seven times, including for theft and hooliganism and other serious and very serious offenses. Moreover, the man was very violent and several years ago mutilated one of his hands in protest while being in penitentiary.
