The Council for the Prevention and Elimination of Discrimination and Ensuring of Equality during two years of activity recorded 21 cases of discrimination at work. In a roundtable meeting, the Council’s head Oxana Gumennaya said that a lot of cases of discrimination are not yet reported, IPN reports.

Oxana Gumennaya noted that most often the persons at work are discriminated on grounds of sex, age and political affiliation. The discriminated persons who complain to the Council are not protected by the legislation, while the Council’s recommendations are ignored and this happens especially because they do not have the power to impose punishment.

Attending the event, Minister of Justice Vladimir Grosu said the authorities know about the discrimination at work, including concerning remuneration, and one of the major tasks of the Ministry is to combat this phenomenon. A possibility is to offer the Council all the mechanisms it needs.

The Council for the Prevention and Elimination of Discrimination and Ensuring of Equality was registered on July 31, 2013. It is an autonomous public authority created based on the Law on Equality of Chances. The Council’s members are named by Parliament. Each member is an independent, politically unaffiliated expert with considerable experience in human rights protection.
