A 5km marathon will be mounted in the center of Chisinau on June 10 under the theme “No to trafficking in human beings”. Everyone is invited to the event organized by the General Police Inspectorate, IPN reports.

The marathon will take place on the section of Stefan cel Mare Blvd between the streets Ismail and Toma Ciorba, between 11:30am and 12:50pm. The area will be closed to traffic for the period of the event.

“Together, by sport, we want to say No to trafficking in human beings. Personally, I will take part in the marathon this Sunday,” General Police Inspectorate chief Alexandru Panzari told a news conference.

According to Lilian Levandovski, head of the Center for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, the men are more exposed to exploitation of labor, while the women to sexual exploitation, for such reasons as the vulnerability of victims, difficult financial situation and non-informing of those who go to work abroad.

After the race, there will be displayed police equipment and set up a recreational area for children. The area around the Great National Assembly Square will be inaccessible to traffic between 1:30pm and 7pm.

“We will exhibit the most modern machinery. You can come with children to the event as there will be a recreational area for them, with lottery prizes and contests and a huge Lego toy,” stated Alexandru Panzari.

In 2017, there were reported 122 offenses related to trafficking in persons, with over 900 victims. In the first three months of this year, the 48 similar offenses discovered involved over 120 victims. The authorities warn the number of related complaints is on the rise.
