Acting President Marian Lupu said he will put himself forward for the post of head of state so that he is registered as a candidate for the December 16 elections, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I remain optimistic. The election of the President is a complex process. We must negotiate and will discuss both with the opposition and the members of the group of Socialists. The fact that the election date was agreed unanimously by the lawmakers is not a reason to believe that all of them will take part in the voting. But I’m optimistic,” Marian Lupu said after Friday’s sitting of the legislative body.
According to the leader of the Democratic Party, if the elections are boycotted, a new date of elections will be set and this process can last endlessly. “That amendment saying the elections are considered null and void if at least 61 lawmakers do not take part in them is aimed at making the MPs more responsible,” said the Acting President.
Marian Lupu also said that when the special commission for the election of the head of state comes together for a meeting to agree all the procedural aspects, he will go to have the medical examination, as the law requires.
On December 2, the lawmakers unanimously adopted a bill to hold the presidential elections on December 16. The November 18 elections were invalidated as no candidate for the presidency was registered.
