The remand detention of mayor of Orhei town Ilan Shor was extended for another 30 days. The decision was taken by the Buiucani Court on July 21, IPN reports.
Before the hearing, Ilan Shor said he will cooperative actively with the investigation bodies. After the judgment was passed, the mayor of Orhei said: “Regretfully, this is not justice, but cynical pressure exerted by particular embassies and bought journalists”.
Ilan Shor’s lawyers consider the court judgment is groundless because it is based on the same principles and proofs that were presented by prosecutors when the arrest was made. “This is against the constant practice of the European Court and the decisions of the Supreme Court, which say that new evidence must be provided. No new proofs were offered,” said one of the lawyers.
According to the lawyers, the remand detention was extended for the reason that the prosecution fears that Ilan Shor could influence the investigation and could shirk responsibility, but this cooperated with the prosecution bodies in the period and made statements. “Only assertions were made, without any substantiation,” said the lawyer, noting that they presented a health certificate showing that Ilan Shor’s state of health is incompatible with detention.
Prosecutor Andrei Baiesu said the court’s decision was an expected one. “Given all the actions that are being taken, we consider the remand detention should be maintained. As regards the investigation into this case, we advanced a lot and hope to shortly send the case to court,” he stated.
Ilan Șor was arrested for 30 days on June 24 on charges of swindle.
