The Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection said the infection was confirmed in only one case of the suspected ones. The child aged seven months from Glodeni is now at a hospital in Balti. This caught the disease while travelling to Ukraine together with his parents during the winter holidays, IPN reports.
According to the Ministry, the situation is intensely supervised as the neighboring countries Romania and Ukraine face hotbeds of measles and the situation is unfavorable from this viewpoint. Both of the states experience serious problems in the vaccination of the population as less than half of the people have been immunized there.
The authorities assure that there is no risk of an epidemic in Moldova and only sporadic cases can be reported. Only those who weren’t vaccinated on time and were in contract with sick people can become infected. The adults who were immunized can develop a light form of the disease if they come in touch with infected persons.
The Ministry calls on the adult population to make sure that their children are vaccinated as this is the only efficient method of preventing the disease. In Moldova, the children are immunized against mumps, measles and rubella by one shot at the ages of one year, 6-7 years and 15-16 years. All the children younger than 18 who weren’t vaccinated at the given ages can be immunized.
