The importance of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to Chisinau and the effects of this summer's drought were among the key subjects discussed by Prime Minister Vlad Filat at meetings with Ambassador Dirk Schuebel, head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, and US Ambassador William Moser. In a press release disseminated by the Government's press service it was said that Vlad Filat and Dirk Schuebel discussed about the latest developments in Moldova and about the Moldova-EU relationship. The officials also spoke about Angela Merkel's recent visit to Moldova, rating it as successful. “The results of this visit were above the expectations of many. We can describe Mrs. Merkel's visit to Moldova as very successful”, said Dirk Schuebel. Vlad Filat said this visit was the result of many years of preparations, mentioning that the basis of this event was laid during a number of important meetings that took place earlier. “This visit was very important, and the strong message of support that we received will help us move towards our objectives at a faster pace”, stated Vlad Filat. The interlocutors noted the latest progresses achieved in the negotiations on the Association Agreement, the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement and on visa liberalization. “The citizens of Moldova are European citizens and they deserve to fully enjoy the European values and freedoms”, stated Vlad Filat. The Prime Minister also met on Thursday with United States Ambassador to Moldova William Moser. The two officials discussed about the current state of the Moldo-American relationship and the prospects of developing it, as well as the progress achieved by Moldova in implementing reforms. The meeting also focused on the issue of this summer's drought and the damages incurred by the Moldovan farmers. The Prime Minister informed the Ambassador that next week local specialists together with FAO and UNDP experts will present an exhaustive assessment of the situation. For his part, the US Ambassador stated that his country will further support the reforms undertaken by the Government to modernize the country and bring it closer to the European Union, as well as in other key areas.
