Speaker Mihai Ghimpu will instruct that the other young persons who supposedly died during the April 2009 events be exhumed. He made the announcement in a meeting with parents and young people who were maltreated by the police last April, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Mihai Ghimpu said he consulted experts about this after he found out that the Prosecutor General's Office and the first parliamentary commission of inquiry into the April events, which was headed by
former Communist MP Vladimir Turcan, hid the pictures taken by the surveillance cameras from the buildings of the Government, the Parliament and the Presidential Office that night. Those pictures were presented by Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca on April 1 this year. Mihai Ghimpu said he found out about them two days before they were made public.
According to Mihai Ghimpu, the Security and Information Service reported that the videos were submitted to the investigation bodies on April 8, 2009 and then to the former parliamentary commission of inquiry. “I presume the decision to hide them was made by the then authorities,” Mihai Ghimpu said.
The Head of Parliament said the parliamentary commission of inquiry that was set up later and is led by the Liberal-Democrat MP Vitalie Nagacevschi came into possession of those videos on November 20, 2009. Earlier, Mihai Ghimpu expressed his indignation at the fact that the commission did not question and announce the names of the police officers who beat young people that night. For his part, Vitalie Nagacevschi said they did not make the videos public so as not to hinder the investigation.
The pictures presented by Dorin Chirtoaca show police officers, including the former municipal police chief Iacob Gumenita, beating a group of protesters in Chisinau's central square on the night of April 8. Allegedly, Valeriu Boboc died that night. The foreign expert who examined his body after exhumation established that Boboc died as a result of the head injuries he received, not from poisoning as the police initially stated.
