The Ministry of Health, Labor, and Social Protection will institute a work group tasked with investigating the use of high-performance medical equipment set up in the National Medical Diagnostic Center and in the Mother and Child Institute, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Ministry announces that the work group will address potential tampering with hardware and software pertaining to the aforementioned equipment, as well as audit accounting records of the patients examined so far.

The Ministry regrets and condemns cases of corruption and law infringements within the medical system, and urges managers of healthcare institutions to take all steps necessary to combat this phenomenon and to ensure abidance by all normative acts.

Furthermore, the Ministry promises to provide all necessary support and information to investigation bodies, in order to eliminate corruption from the healthcare system and take legal action against those responsible.

A number of doctors from the National Medical Diagnostic Center and from the Mother and Child Institute (Radiology and Imaging Department) are under criminal investigation for taking illegal fees from insured patients to perform urgent imaging scans. They are facing up to ten years in prison with a ban from holding public posts for up to ten years, and a maximum fine of 400,000 lei.
