The Republic of Moldova is encouraged to switch to Natura 2000 ecological network of protected areas as soon as possible, thus aligning itself with the standards applied in the European Union. The prospects of the transition process were discussed by environmental specialists at a conference in Chisinau, IPN reports.

Petr Roth, an expert in the management of protected natural areas from the Czech Republic, said that a country cannot become a member of the European Union without having implemented Natura 2000 network standards. It is a lengthy process that is rather difficult to implement. It is important to create a state-funded nature conservation agency with a team focused on research and statistics.

“We understand that the process of transitioning from the Emerald network to the Natura 2000 network is a lengthy process that requires additional effort from all key actors. When the objective is to join the European Union and to be a member state, we assume these obligations and we intend not only to transpose the legislation of the European Union, but also to implement it successfully,” said Irina Punga, deputy secretary general of the Ministry of Environment.

Gabriel Mărgineanu, executive director of the Biotica Ecological Society, said that discussions are being held with the Ministry of Environment regarding the Natura 2000 network, but the political and economic situation in the country must be taken into account. “When the accession to the European Union has become a matter of principle for us and Natura 2000 is the main assessment element in this path, we must understand that directing financial resources for an activity that does not fully correspond to Natura 2000 will represent less efficient spending of money,” stated Gabriel Mărgineanu.

The event was held within the Czech Support for Better Management of Protected Areas in Moldova Project.
