Moldova must make progress in honoring all the obligations and commitments undertaken within the Council of Europe so that it could be freed from the Council’s monitoring, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Anne Brasseur said after a meeting with Head of Parliament Igor Corman, IPN reports.

The official said that since Moldova joined the Council of Europe, the country made huge progress, but is still being monitored. This means that Moldova has yet work to do, including in reforming the prosecution service, but the country is in a state of blockage because the Constitution’s provision concerning the appointment of the prosecutor general must be modified. “We are aware of this situation that appeared when the prosecution service started to be reformed,” stated the PACE President.

Anne Brasseur noted that these commitments must be fulfilled not for the PACE, but for every citizen of Moldova so that the basic human rights and fundamental freedoms of every Moldovan are observed.

According to the PACE President, if the Council of Europe ends its monitoring, this does not mean that Moldova will no longer have responsibilities as all the countries that were freed from monitoring continue to assume obligations and commitments.

“I came to Moldova as an official, but hope to leave it as a friend of this country,” stated Anne Brasseur.

Igor Corman said the goal of the Moldovan authorities is to reach the post-monitoring phase, but the fact that Moldova is monitored is not a negative thing and a shame. “It means that we are supported by the Council of Europe. We know what problems we face and what solutions we can find to them,” he stated.

Anne Brasseur is paying an official visit to Moldova on July 16-18. She will have meetings with a number of senior officials and will give a speech in the July 17 sitting of Parliament. The same day, the PACE President will visit Moldova’s Transnistrian region.
