The Republic of Moldova ranks second in the world by alcohol consumption per capita. Alcohol consumption remains the leading cause of death or disability and can cause over 60 types of different diseases and pathological states, including traumas and mental and behavioral disorders, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the Ministry of Health.

In 2014, the social costs associated with alcohol consumption rose to about 111.8 million lei, which is 1% of the GDP. Over 46,000 chronic alcoholics and 622 persons with alcoholic-related psychosis were under medical supervision in narcological institutions at the end of 2015. Also, 5,627 people were under preventive supervision for abusing alcohol. About 40 persons die annually in road accidents caused by inebriated persons in Moldova, with about 200 persons being hurt in these.

In order to adjust the national legislation on alcohol control to the EU’s and to the recommendations of the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health will propose amendments and supplements to a number of legal acts so as to ban promotion and advertising of alcoholic beverages through broadcasters.
