A group of Moldovan children will produce a report on the observance of children’s rights in Moldova and will present it to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. The group is supported by the Information and Documentation Center on Child Rights of Moldova, IPN reports.
Moldova ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and, alongside other states, committed itself to reporting how the child rights are observed in the country once in five years. In 2015, the Government is to present the next report. Besides the Government’s report, the Committee also examines a report presented by civil society, of which the children’s report forms part.
According to a communiqué of the Information and Documentation Center on Child Rights, the children’s group consists of 35 representatives from 12 districts and municipalities. The children are aged between 12 and 28 and represent different consultative councils, including children with specials needs, Roma children, and beneficiaries of childcare services. The children will be involved in a number of activities, including regional and national workshops, meetings with the authorities, consultations with mates from settlements, opinion polls, etc. All the workshops will be staged during vacations and on the weekend.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is a human rights treaty which sets out the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of children. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on November 20, 1989. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child is composed of 18 members from countries around the world. It meets three times a year in Geneva and analyzes the situation of every state that ratified the Convention. The Committee cannot force a country to take certain measures. It can only formulate recommendations and objective criticism after examining the reports.
