A Moldovan man who was sentenced in Belgium to seven years in prison for causing over €3 million damage to the Belgian state as a result of clandestine manufacture of cigarettes was arrested in Chisinau. The man will also pay a fine of €800,000, IPN reports.
According to the General Police Inspectorate, in Belgium the man ran a criminal organization made up of Moldovan citizens. At least ten of them have been convicted.
After collecting information, the Moldovan authorities established that the man, aged over 40, invested, through money laundering, large amounts in luxury property – a house with pool and cars. Some of the possessions were registered in the name of other persons.
Law enforcement officers carried out searches in Chisinau, seizing a luxury car, a pistol and improperly kept cartridges.
Following the apprehension, the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases filed charges against him and requested that he should be remanded in custody for 30 days. However, the Ciocana Court of Chisinau ordered that the man be placed under house arrest.
