Moldovan lifters won three medals at the World Powerlifting Championships which ended recently in Glasgow, Scotland, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Tudor Moraru took the gold in the 82.5kg Teenager-2 category, in addition to setting a 167.5 kg world record for squat, and Serghei Teliucov won a silver and a bronze medal in the 67.5kg seniors category.
“After successfully passing the drug tests, the results were validated. Our Federation has constantly brought medals from international tournaments”, Boris Volosatii, the president of the National Powerlifting Federation, told a news conference on Tuesday.
17-year-old Tudor Moraru told reporters that the competition was organized at very high standards and impressed him a lot. Serghei Teliucov, for his part, admitted that it was a difficult tournament for him because of an earlier injury as well as due to an unprecedentedly large number of competitors.
“Despite all problems, I am very pleased that Moldova not only participated in the tournament but also won medals”, said team coach Oleg Gresiev.
In 2011 the Ministry of Youth and Sports allocated roughly 50,000 lei ($4,246) to the Moldovan Powerlifting Federation. Despite a scarce budget, Moldovan powerlifters have set 24 world records in different categories over the last ten years.
