During 2017, Moldovan wines have won over 300 medals. Solicited by IPN News Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment declared that 60% of the medals brought home are golden. According to the ministry, the high point of 2017 was the expansion of Moldovan wines in over 40 countries.
In 2017, the volume of certified wine batches with Protected Geographical Indication reached almost 3 million liters. The National Office for Vine and Wine (ONVV) mentions that 10% of the total of wines produced in the Republic of Moldova and distributed on the local and international markets are attributed Protected Geographical Indications, which marks an increase in quality of Moldovan wines and their competitiveness on international markets.
According to ONVV, a study aimed at protecting the first Protected Designations of Origin was initiated in 2017. This study highlights the specifics of local wine varieties, soil and climate, and contributes to the increase in quality and recognition of Moldovan wines on international markets. “For the first time since the launch of the country wine brand “Wine of Moldova. A legend Alive”, two of the major marketing activities for promoting our wines were conducted in the largest supermarket chains in Poland”, according to the National Office for Vine and Wine for IPN.
Also in 2017, four demonstrative farms were launched within the “Quality grapes” project. The farms are fitted with equipment for diagnosis of weather conditions and monitoring of disease risks. The best conditions for growth and development of vines characteristic for our area will be assessed within these plantations, with the purpose of achieving good harvests and quality grapes.
According to official data, over 150 thousand tourists have visited Moldovan wineries and wine cellars in 2017. This year, the Grand Prize for special merits in the wine sector was awarded to Cricova Winery.
