Dozens of anti-NATO militants, including a Moldovan young man who participated in an alternative action related to the NATO summit, were taken into custody at Bucharest police offices for hours on Wednesday afternoon, April 2. When set free, many of them showed signs they were beaten, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent accredited at the NATO summit reports from Bucharest. “The arrests have been done by masked police with plastic armor”, said the Moldovan, specifying they were not told why they had been arrested. They were detained in a factory in the Timpuri Noi area of Bucharest where the anti-NATO militants rented a room. “Later I learnt of a possible attack of four unidentified people on a guardian”, the man said. The youth, his face with signs of blows, said both he and his colleagues were beaten when arrested, on their way and at the police office. He says he came to Bucharest to participate in a cultural event, including discussion workshops, watching movies and a concert, not for protests. Three Romanian lawyers provided legal assistance to the detainees. Opinion leaders from Bucharest restrained from making categorical statements. Anyway the ones who dared to comment the case said the police displayed an abusive behavior and those persons were obstructed to freely express their position. The spokesman of the Bucharest police, Christian Ciocan, said the youths could leave the police quarters after being identified. The police arrested 26 ethnic Romanians, 22 Germans, 2 Czechs, a Moldovan, a Portuguese, a Spaniard and a Pole. The injured were consulted by a doctor, while the facts will get a legal qualification after compiling the medical-legal report.
