The citizens of the Republic of Moldova who arrive from eight South African states (South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambican, Namibia, Eswatini, and Malawi) will mandatorily stay at home for 14 days after entering the Republic of Moldova. Quarantine can be interrupted after the seventh day if the persons do a PCR test and the result is negative, IPN reports.

In an emergency meeting on November 28, centering on the appearance of the new COVID-19 variant B.1.1.529 – Omicron, the National Extraordinary Public Health Commission decided to deny access to Moldova to foreigners and stateless persons who traveled to the eight countries the past 14 days. The Commission also considered the possibility of later introducing additional measures applying to persons who come from countries considered with risk of transmitting the new variant and is to monitor the developments and flow of passengers the next few days.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration was entrusted with the task of taking the necessary measures to determine if there are Moldovans in the eight South African states and what repatriation measures can be taken, if necessary.

The Commission recommended avoiding travelling to the eight countries and to other states in which cases of infection with Omicron, which was labeled as a variant of concern by the WHO, were identified.
