Moldova is a diverse country with rich traditions and is thus unique in its way. This is a big advantage that should be put to good use. The suggestion was made by the UN Resident Coordinator Dafina Gerceva, PNUD Resident Representative in Moldova, IPN reports.
At the Forum of Youth of National Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities, Dafina Gerceva said experience shows that societies where the people share the same views, enjoy equal rights and mutual respect are the most prosperous ones and this is the road that Moldova should follow.
In the same event, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Liliana Palihovici said there are no rights that are more important than the others because they are all crucial for humans. There are no people who are more or less important when it is about their rights, while the tolerant behavior in society can bring more welfare and democracy to everyone.
The Forum of Youth of National Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities held on February 21 brought together over 130 representatives of minorities, civic activists, development partners, etc. The event was held as a result of last year’s visit by the UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues and the Universal Periodic Review of the situation in Moldova by the UN Human Rights Council. These recommended that Moldova should ensure the conditions needed for minorities’ rights to be respected.
