Gagauzia wants to expand the study of the Gagauz and Romanian languages. Gagauz lawmakers approved on April 8 the draft of a new law "On education", IPN reports.

The Executive Committee proposes introducing the teaching of the Gagauz language and literature in all schools in the region, regardless of the language of instruction. School curricula should include the study of the history of the homeland, using both official and alternative sources.

In addition, it is proposed to organize extra-curricular activities (careers, competitions, creative evenings and other events) in the languages spoken in the Gagauz ATU: Gagauz, Russian and Romanian (although the term "Moldovan" has never been replaced by "Romanian" in the ATU).

However, in educational establishments the language is called Romanian.  It is proposed to organize weekly "patriotic careers" to "strengthen patriotic civic education".

The topics will be proposed by the Education Directorate of Gagauzia together with the Scientific Research Center of Gagauzia M.V. Marunevich. At least 50% of the content must be in the Gagauz language.

The bill pays particular attention to the official language. It is proposed to increase the number of hours for teaching Romanian in all general education institutions.

There are 3 schools in Gagauzia teaching in Romanian: Eminescu High School in Comrat, "Luceafarul" High School in Vulcănești and Mihail Ceachir Theoretical High School in the town of Vulcanesti. Ceadir - Lunga. In the remaining schools, subjects are taught in Russian.

The draft law has to go through a number of stages before it enters into force. Within 6 months, the Executive Committee should draft and submit to the People's Assembly of Gagauzia proposals to harmonize local legislation with the updated law on education, and the People's Assembly should consider these proposals.
