65% of the residents of Gagauzia want Moldova to join the Eurasian Customs Union, while 6.4% are for the integration into the European Union, shows an opinion poll presented by the NGO “Polit-Contact”. The study covered a sample of 1,200 people, IPN reports.
Over 40% of the respondents are satisfied with the current status of Gagauzia, while 16% would like it to be an independent state. More than 45% of those polled consider that the Gagauz autonomous unit needs additional financial and economic powers and that the Moldovan Government should better promote the interests of the Gagauz people at foreign level.
More than a half of those questioned said they are ready to take part in a referendum, while 8.8% said the plebiscite results will be ignored by the authorities.
The authors of the poll didn’t class the Gagauz region as a conflict zone and established that its inhabitants only want to keep their history, traditions and the language of communication.
