Four men and a women got prison sentences ranging from 8 to 10 years in prison for a 2017 armed burglary committed in Briceni. The crime was planned and directed by telephone by three inmates serving previous sentences, the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a press release.
The target was a Briceni elderly woman owning a jewelry business and who had been neighbors with one of the inmates. The 77-year-old was tied up and held at gunpoint, but the perpetrators – a former cellmate of the trio and his mother – could only make off with 12,000 lei ($695) worth of gold trinkets.
The three inmates had been convicted on similar theft charges. Now they each face 10 additional years behind bars.
The woman, 57, got 8 years for her role in the burglary and her son will return to prison for 9 more years.
