The works to reconstruct the Parliament’s building are 70% finished. During a visit to the building site on January 11, Alexandru Gutu, director of the company that is performing the works, said that the lawmakers will be able to hold sittings in the old hall at the end of March. Last October, it was announced that the repair works will be completed at the beginning of 2013, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Alexandru Gutu, the works are overdue because a part of the necessary money had been transferred to the company’s account at the end of 2012. A sum of 109 million lei of the 177 million lei needed has been transferred so far. This sum is enough to reconstruct only the Parliament’s sitting hall. More money is needed to repair the offices of the MPs and other employees of the legislative body. The calculations haven’t been done yet. The sitting hall has been extended by several meters. There was added an additional storey and built an annex. The Parliament’s corridors will be covered in marble, while the hall will be made from walnut wood of different nuances. All the rooms have been connected to the heat supply in October. The power supply station was repaired. About 200 workers have been engaged in the reconstruction of the Parliament’s building. They work by six days a week and are paid salaries of 5,000 to 7,000 lei, depending on the volume of work done. The building was destroyed during the April 7, 2009 protests. The repair works were stopped in 2010 because there was no money, but were resumed last August.
