Municipality concerned over soaring number of house fires

Chisinau authorities are growing concerned over the soaring number of house fires ascribed to people’s negligence. Victor Mutaf, deputy head of the division for emergencies in Chisinau city, told a City Hall meeting on Monday that there were registered 10 fires across the municipality over the past week alone, 7 of which were house fires. Two children in the suburban town of Gratiesti died and one person was seriously injured. Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca considers that the solution to the problem lies with information campaigns, which would familiarise the people with the current situation and with fire prevention rules. Victor Mutaf explained that although such measures are taken at present, the limited personnel and resources the division currently has reduces their efficiency. According to him, dwellers’ associations and suburban authorities must get involved more actively in conducting information and fire prevention campaigns. Since the beginning of the year, 60 fires broke out in Chisinau, taking the lives of 5 people. In the country, there were recorded 227 fires, with a toll of 34.
