A graffiti mural centering on gender equality was inaugurated by UN Women Moldova at the Technical University of Moldova (UTM) in Chisinau. Titled “It’s Time for Equality Now”, the mural illustrates a world in which gender equality was achieved, where everyone can obtain what they want, regardless of gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation. The mural is based on the use of art as a catalyst for the promotion of gender quality in the context of the Generation Equality Forum that was held in Paris at the end of June, IPN reports.

“The problem of gender equality is important and topical today, primarily in the context of vocational education where we always felt that stereotype that girls should go study specialties that are considered typically feminine, like food technology, while boys should study car building. This is not true and our goal is to fight this false assertion as there are no borders between genders and these stereotypes should be combated,” said UTM rector Viorel Bostan.

Attending the event, Sweden’s Ambassador to Moldova Anna Lyberg said today’s inauguration is a visual expression of the dialogue about gender equality. “An increasing number of countries recognize the power of art and culture in the promotion of human rights. By creation, one can contribute to sensitizing public opinion and also to catalyzing collective actions so as to achieve determined results in gender equality,” stated Anna Lyberg.

“As the Ambassador of France to the Republic of Moldova, I’m honored that I can plead for gender equality and can fight against gender-based violence. Also, together with UN Women, owing to the Generation Equality Forum that was held in Paris and to its innovative approaches, we managed to create an action space with ambitious goals and concrete results,” said the Ambassador of France to Moldova Pascal Le Deunff.

UN Women Country Representative Dominika Stojanoska said this mural painting will constantly remind of what we all should do to achieve gender equality. “We must continue the dialogue with young people so as to combat gender stereotypes and to encourage them to be vocal and active, to demand concrete changes so that, by their actions, they motivate and inspire those around,” said Dominika Stojanoska, being quoted in a press release.

This is the second mural inaugurated by UN Women Moldova. The first was unveiled in December 2020 and was dedicated to solidarity in fighting violence against women.
