The National Anticorruption Center was transferred under the management of the Government. The bill was put to the vote at the suggestion of the Lib-Dems. After the transformation of the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime into the National Anticorruption Center on October 1, 2012, the institution was transferred under the control of Parliament, IPN reports.
The head of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Valeriu Strelet proposed that the Center’s director should be hired and fired by the President of Moldova, at the suggestion of the Prime Minister. The proposal was accepted by a majority of votes. The director’s term in office will be four years.
The bill was passed in two readings.
In a news conference, the executive director of the Resource Center for Human Rights (CReDO) Sergiu Ostaf said an institution that combats corruption cannot be subordinate to the Cabinet. In the worst case, it can be subordinate to the Prosecutor General’s Office. According to him, such an institution needs greater autonomy and independence.
