A contingent of the National Army will participate in the EU operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR ALTHEA). The deployment of the servicemen was approved on Wednesday by the Cabinet, IPN reports.

The contingent of National Army soldiers will consist of 20 servicemen who will carry out missions with tasks typical of operations in support of peace in the area of responsibility. It will be equipped with weapons, ammunition, military equipment, means of transmission and other material goods necessary for the fulfillment of the mission.

“The Government is taking concrete measures to show its commitment to contribute to global peace and security by participating in peacekeeping missions and operations under the aegis of international organizations. Currently, the contingents of the National Army participate in peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Lebanon, established on the basis of the resolution of the United Nations Security Council,” said Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatyi.

The EUFOR ALTHEA operation was established based on the United Nations Security Council Resolution of 2004 and the decision of the Council of the European Union of 25 November 2004. At the same meeting, a draft on the participation of National Army personnel in the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM Somalia) was approved. “This allows the further strengthening of cooperation relations with the European Union in the field of crisis management by deploying military personnel to participate in international peacekeeping missions and operations... The draft law provides for the selection, training and deployment of two National Army servicemen,” stated the minister.
