The National Award “Grigore Vieru – 2009” was given to linguist Vasile Bahnaru, the acting director of the Philology Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, for the monograph “Elements of Romanian Semasilogy”, Info-Prim Neo reports. The award ceremony was held as part of an international scientific conference dedicated to the 75th birthday of academician and poet Grigore Vieru. The National Award “Grigore Vieru” of 30,000 lei is offered once in two years by the Supreme Council for Science and Technological Development of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Handing over the prize, Moldova’s Acting President Mihai Ghimpu said Grigore Vieru would have agreed with such a decision as the fight in the 1990s started also through Vasile Bahnaru‘s publicistic and scientific articles in which the author pleads consistently for the assertion of the Romanian language. “I praise Vasile Bahnaru for his resolution to continuously fight for justice and the truth, which are essential qualities that ensure the existence of a healthy society,” The Academy of Sciences’ president Gheorghe Duca said that from this year the National Award “Grigore Vieru” will be given in concert with the Academy of Sconces of Romania, for research and for creation. The monographic volume “Grigore Vieru – the Poet”, which forms part of the collection “Academica”, was launched during the same commence.
