The blood transfusion labs of Moldova will be outfitted with modern equipment and special areas for safely keeping blood products. These and other measures to increase the safety and quality of blood products form part of the second stage of the project “Strengthening hemo-transfusional security in the Republic of Moldova” for 2017-2021. Encouragement of voluntary blood donation is a component part of the project, IPN reports.

Minister of Health Ruxanda Glavan told a news conference that the first stage of the project carried out in 2014-2016 enabled to create one institution with the status of legal entity for coordinating blood transfusion at the central level. “We had the possibility of outfitting the National Blood Transfusion Center with modern laboratory equipment and could provide the necessary blood products,” stated the minister.

The Center’s director Svetlana Cojocari said the rational use of blood products and implementation of national clinical protocols help strengthen the principles of quality in the management of hemo-transfusional assistance within health facilities.

Swiss Red Cross expert Damiano Castello noted that to ensure the quality of blood products, all the involved players should be trained at the highest level. International standards on blood products should be met and the whole process should be monitored.

To implement the project “Strengthening hemo-transfusional security in the Republic of Moldova” for 2017-2021, the Swiss Red Cross will provide technical and financial assistance to the value of over 15.8 million lei.

More than 30,000 patients need blood transfusion in Moldova annually.
