More than 100 book titles, maps and other documents concerning events related to Bessarabia’s union with Romania of 1918 were displayed at the National Library in Chisinau on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Great Union that is celebrated on December 1 this year and of the National Day of Romania, IPN reports.

National Library director Elena Pintilei said the exhibition highlights the Library’s book collection. The National Library keeps thousands of books centering on the historical event – the Great Union – from 1918 until 2018.

Historian Andrei Eşanu said the 100th anniversary of the Great Union is one of the most important events in the history of the Romanian nation. The national unity was effected 100 years ago and the Great Romania was formed. “The Romanians had headed for this national unity of nation, language, tradition and spirit for hundreds of years, being divided by predatory neighboring empires and kingdoms. The path was difficult, with a lot of sacrifice. Most of the victims were caused by World War One, when hundreds of thousands of soldiers and officers and other hundreds of thousands of ordinary people, peasants and farmers endured suffering, poverty and famine,” stated Andrei Eşanu.

According to historian Ion Negrei, in 2018 the Romanians from Bessarabia feel what the Romanians felt on December 1, 1918. The events held in Chisinau on the occasion of the Great Union express gratitude to our forerunners who made the union. “The national unity is the significance of the day of December 1. It is a holiday that makes us feel together, no matter where we are,” he stated.

The exhibition can be visited for an indefinite period.
