The new electoral system based on which the next parliamentary elections will be held in the Republic of Moldova is designed to keep the current rulers in power, said representatives of opposition parties. Political analysts noted this system is very European and is applied in many EU states. The opinions were stated in the talk show “People’s Council” on 10tv channel, IPN reports.

Vladimir Bolea, chairman of the Chisinau municipal organization of the Party “Action and Solidarity”, said the Republic of Moldova will wake up with a non-representative legislative body as a result of the mixed electoral system. The voting of the mixed-member electoral system was a real circus show because the Democrats first announced that they collected over 800,000 signatures in favor of the uninominal voting system and placed everywhere posters showing how well it is to have own representatives in Parliament, but shortly they voted for another electoral system together with the Socialists.

Nicolae Girbu, founder of the Party “Voice of the People”, said the goal of the electoral system change is to help the current political class to keep power. A number of single-member constituencies were established with the aim of rigging the elections. “The elections could be rigged through local representatives and administrative resources. A person who can get 10% of the vote will represent us in Parliament. The citizens will not be in Parliament,” stated Nicolae Girbu.

Political analyst Vitalie Catana expressed a different opinion. According to him, the mixed electoral system is a European one and is used in many EU states. As regards the greater corruption and other political vices, he said these appeared namely under the majority electoral system. As to the Venice Commission’s opinion that insufficient debates were held on the issue, Vitalie Catanan noted that discussions were held on the system, but namely the representatives of the opposition avoided taking part in them.
