New local mayoral elections will take place in Leuseni village of Hancesti district and Volovita village of Soroca district on May 20, 2018. Decisions to this effect were taken by the Central Election Commission (CEC) on October 20, IPN reports.

CEC president Alina Russu said the posts of mayor in the two villages became vacant after the mayors tendered their resignations.

Commission member Sergiu Gurduza suggested that the political affiliation of mayors should be indicated in the relevant decisions in the future. There should be also specified if the mayors joined later another party and which one. But the proposal was not supported.

The two villages are the first for which the CEC scheduled new local elections next spring.

Under an earlier decision, new local elections on November 19 this year will be held in the following villages: Zarnesti of Cahul district, Fundurii Noi of Glodeni, Stefanesti of Floresti, Plopi of Cantemir, Sarateni of Leova, Ghiliceni of Telenesti, Lapusna of Hancesti, Sangera of Chisinau municipality, Berlinti of Briceni and Capriana of Straseni district.
