The public organization Human Rights Information Center in a study says most of the Moldovan schools are subject to Christian-Orthodox indoctrination. According to the study authors, this is a flagrant violation of the Constitution, which says that the state education is laic, IPN reports.
In over 40% of the visited schools, there are Christian-Orthodox objects and symbols in halls and classrooms, such as icons, crucifixes, prayers and religious pictures. A Christian-Orthodox church works inside a school situated in the municipality of Chisinau and there are a lot of large religious pictures and boards with prayers and teachings inside the school.
The parents questioned within the study said they are against the presence of religion in schools, when the priest comes on September 1 to bless the school, when the teachers say prayers at the beginning of lessons or when the children pray together with the children at the canteen before eating.
The Human Rights Information Center insistently asks the Government and the Ministry of Education to stop the violation of the Constitution and to ensure the truly laic character of the public education system.
The Ministry of Education hasn’t commented on the findings of the study.
The Human Rights Information Center is a nongovernmental organization founded in 2010.
