NGOs launch campaign to support victims of torture

A number of NGOs announced the launch of a campaign entitled “Against impunity and in support of victims of torture”, which will be carried out between June 14 and June 27, IPN reports.

Amnesty International Moldova said the campaign will be launched by a march within which they will make a public call to the Ministry of the Interior, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Chisinau City Hall, the Ministry of Justice and Parliament, by which they will ask that the authorities fulfill the national and international commitments concerning the prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment.

The call will include a request to swiftly, objectively and equitably complete the criminal case into the April 7, 2009 events and the actions to eliminate impunity. Afterward, the authorities will be invited to a roundtable meeting in response to the public call. There will be held a news conference centering on the April 7, 2009 events, public debates, information tours, etc.

The NGOs that will conduct the campaign are: Amnesty International Moldova, the Legal Resources Center of Moldova, the Resource Center for Human Rights, the Rehabilitation Center for Torture Victims “Memoria”, Promo-LEX, the Nondiscrimination Collation, the National Roma Center, Gender-Doc, and the Human Rights Information Center.

The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture has been marked on June 26 starting with 1997, in memory of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading
Treatment or Punishment that took effect in 1987.
