The opinion of the deputy head of the National Integrity Commission about the bill that provides for the liquidation of the National Integrity Commission (NIC) and the creation of a national integrity center does not represent the official position of the institution. A press statement on the issue was released after Victor Stratila in a news conference said that this bill is designed to sabotage the fight against corruption, IPN reports.
In the statement, the NIC says Victor Stratila ignored the legal provisions. “Under the Law on the National Integrity Commission No. 180 of 19.12.2011, only the Commission’s head has the right to represent the Commission in the relations with other public authorities and institutions, with natural and legal persons,” reads the communique.
The Commission says that in accordance with the current legislation, Victor Stratila didn’t have the right to give a news conference from the position of deputy head of the NIC because his powers in this regard are limited. Consequently, the statements he made in this conference cannot be commented on as the given event wasn’t held in accordance with the law.
In a news conference at IPN, Victor Stratila said that by promoting a bill to liquidate the Commission and to create a national integrity center, the authors actually sabotage the fight against corruption. He noted that the NIC achieved very good results during the first two years of work and this troubles those who do not want to declare their incomes and property and do not want to be punished for not doing this.
