Nicolae Costin commemorated 17 years after death

Chisinau councilors, district heads, employees of the City Hall, people of culture and ordinary people commemorated former mayor of the capital city Nicolae Costin, who died 17 years ago, at the Central Cemetery, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to a communiqué from the City Hall, a group of priests headed by priest Ioan Ciuntu of Saint Teodora de la Sihla Church officiated at a religious ceremony in memory of Nicolae Costin.
Mayor General Dorin Chirtoaca said that Nicolae Costin played a very important role in building the current municipality of Chisinau and in our national renaissance. He urged his colleagues and all those attending to contribute to the fulfillment of the dreams and ideals of the first mayor elected democratically and to pass on the values and ideals in which Nicolae Costin believed to the future generations.
The municipality published the album “Nicolae Costin, Promoter of the National Renaissance” that is given to the guests of the capital city and official delegations. There was also made a documentary about Nicolae Costin. A commemorative plaque was unveiled at the intersection of Stefan cel Mare Blvd. and Vlaicu Parcalab St.
Nicolae Costin was the first mayor of Chisinau municipality elected democratically and is one of the forerunners of the National Renaissance Movement. Among his most important accomplishments is the restoration of the national traditions in education and culture, namely the opening of the Romanian-English high schools “Mircea Eliade”, Romanian-French high school “Gheorghe Asachi”, Romanian-Italian high school “Danti Alighieri” and of the public libraries “Onisifor Ghibu” and “Transilvania”. Nicolae Costin established cooperation relations with the main towns of Romania and other countries. He was the first to promote reforms to develop the capital. Nicolae Costin died on February 16, 1995.
