“The economic state of the country and the people’s welfare, the foreign investment and the foreign partners’ support depend on the quality of justice. The foreign investors will not come to a country where justice does not work. Regretfully, this is the blame of the judges. I refer to some of the judges who will have to decide what they will do next,” President Nicolae Timofti said in the General Assembly of Judges on March 13, IPN reports.
The head of state noted that important public and European resources were invested in infrastructure in the legal system, while the judges receive salaries that are much higher than the average salary per country. “This was a starting point in our efforts to reform the justice system. All the states that transformed this sector did so. This decision placed you among the elites. In other words, you benefit from preferential treatment in this respect,” stated Nicolae Timofti, calling on the judges to show responsibility.
He also urged the judges who cannot work in the new conditions to leave the system. “I call on them to analyze things very well before making a choice – in favor of justice or in favor of personal benefits. In this connection, I reiterate the necessity of promoting the judges according to clear professional and integrity criteria,” said Nicolae Timofti. Last year, over 40 judges left the system, while over the last five years about one third of the judges were replaced.
