Presidents and vice presidents of the Supreme Court of Justice will not be allowed to hold more than consecutive terms. A bill to this effect proposed by the Ministry of Justice has been approved in first reading by Parliament, Info-Prim Neo reports.
If the post of president falls vacant, including in the case when the term of the Supreme Court president expires, the vice president with the greatest length of service in the Supreme Court will serve as caretaker. The greatest length of service rule will also apply in the case of vice presidential vacancies.
The bill also provides that the chairs and deputy chairs of courts will be selected in a contest organized by the Superior Council of Magistrates.
The Ministry of Justice said that the bill aims to eliminate deficiencies of the existing provisions concerning the process of selecting and appointing heads of courts as well as to regulate caretaker situations.
