The number of persons suffering from tuberculosis who will be admitted to the hospital will be reduced by 50% in 2018. The patients will be in the hospital for at most 30 days, not 66 days as now. The Republic of Moldova undertook such a commitment within the TB Regional EECA Project (TB-REP) on Strengthening Health Systems for Effective TB and DR-TB Control, IPN reports, quoting the Ministry of Health.
The solution recommended by the World Health Organization is for the non-infectious patients to be treated at home. The WHO argued that two weeks after the initiation of treatment, the person no longer transmits the Koch bacillus that develops the disease. Thus, the patients can receive treatment at home, under medical supervision.
For the purpose, the Ministry of Health will work out new performance indicators for family doctors who are responsible for the early detection of TB. This will make them to more efficiently monitor the infected persons and those who risk catching the infection.
The WHO also recommends that the medical and social workers should cooperate between them in identifying persons who risk becoming infected with TB so as to prevent the spread of disease.
More than 2,700 persons with TB were hospitalized in Moldova last year.
