A lower number of offenses had been recorded in Moldova during the first ten days of 2010 - 331 offenses or by 115 fewer compared with the corresponding period last year, the head of the Ministry's Public Order Division Mihai Cebotaru said at a news conference.
“There was a case of murder, as against three in the same period last year. The number of cases of hooliganism and theft decreased. In the period, there were recorded nine cases of housebreaking, three cases of bird theft and five cases of hooliganism,” Cebotaru said.
According to him, the results are due to the measures taken by the Ministry of the Interior during the winter holidays. At the same time, the people showed responsibility and obeyed the restrictions imposed by the Ministry.
On New Year's Eve, the police officers discovered 11 persons who had firearms and more than 500 persons who had bottles of alcoholic drinks on them while in the Great National Assembly Square. There were reported no offenses committed by minors. No person needed medical care.
Mihai Cebotaru said the 38 road accidents that happened during the winter vacation resulted in nine deaths and 64 persons injured. He stressed that the number of deaths claimed by traffic accidents decreased, but of injured persons increased.
