Number of students enrolled at private institutions over 4% higher

As many as 334,500 students attended primary and secondary educational institutions at the start of the 2022-2023 school year, 0.6% down on the previous year. Over 97% were admitted to public institutions. Compared with the 2021-2022 year, the number of students at public institutions decreased by 0.8%, while at private institutions grew by 4.3%, IPN reports.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, over 80% of all the students study in Romanian, 19% - in Russian, while 0.1% - in English. English remains the most popular foreign language that was chosen by 75% of the students, up 1.1 percentage points on the previous year.

In 2022, a secondary school was graduated by 31,500 students, up 4.1%. 11,600 students graduated from a high school, up 2.5%. A Baccalaureate diploma was obtained by about 90% of the candidates, down 2.3 percentage points.

The teaching and managerial staff in primary and secondary educational institutions in the 2022-2023 school year total 26,300, down 0.9% on the previous year. 26.7% of them are aged between 50 and 59. The female teaching staff represent 87% of the total, while the female managerial staff – about 93%. 57.3% of the teachers and managers have a seniority of 20 years and more.

There are now over 1,200 primary and secondary educational institutions, by 13 fewer than in the 2021-2022 school year. Of the total, 98.1% belong to the public sector, while 74.3% are from rural areas.
