The perception of the right to the highest standard of health exceeded 52%, compared to 20.9% in 2016. Against the same period, the perception of the respect for the right to a fair trial also increased, from 13% to 38%. Progress was also made in the area of respect for the right to social assistance and protection, with the perception reaching almost 45%. The data are contained in the Ombudsperson’s Activity Report for 2023, which was presented to the Commission on Human Rights and Interethnic Relations, IPN reports.
Compared to 2016, the perception of the right to work and labor protection tripled and exceeded 60%. The report contains data on the observance of human rights on the left bank of the Nistru River and the general situation regarding the prevention of torture, as well as the situation of persons held in penitentiary institutions or detained by police.
Ombudsman for the Rights of the Child Vasile Coroi said that among the most problematic issues identified in 2023 are poverty, limited availability of support services for children in difficulty, poor provision of services for children with deviant behavior and the insufficient protection of minors against any form of violence.
“We express the commitment of the members of the Commission on Human Rights and Interethnic Relations to get fully involved in improving the situation in the field of protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. The debates on the subject in the Parliament’s plenary sittings have the mission to make the authorities responsible for implementing the recommendations formulated in this Report,” said Grigore Novac, chairman of the Commission for Human Rights and Interethnic Relations.
The report on the observance of human rights and freedoms in the Republic of Moldova in 2023 will also be examined in the plenary sitting of the Parliament.
