The Orthodox Christians observe the Feast of Saint Basil the Great on January 14. Priest Pavel Borshevski, the bishop of Saint Dumitru Church in Chisinau, has told Info-Prim Neo that Saint Basil is one of the greatest pillars of the Church.
“He left us a lot of works, analyses, rules, the Liturgy that we use several times a year – during Lent, on Christmas Eve, before Epiphany, on Easter, on Holy Thursday and on the eve of the Feast of Saint Basil,” the priest said.
On January 13, the children go through the village and sing congratulation songs. The people give them gifts such as candies, cakes, knot-shaped bread and money. On January 14, it is celebrated New Year according to the Julian calendar
St. Basil loved children and always assisted the sick and the homeless. He was the first bishop to establish orphanages and hospitals and old age homes. He first directed the attention of the Church to these unfortunate victims of society.
