The wheat reaping season is over. The farmers collected over 1.1 million tonnes of wheat, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov said while on a trip accompanied by journalists, IPN reports.

As many as 456,000 hectares were sowed with grains in 2014. 315,500 hectares or almost 70% were sowed with winter wheat, 60,000 hectares with winter barley, 30,000 hectares with rape, while 35,000 hectares with spring barley. The average yield is 3.5 tonnes of wheat per hectare.

Vasile Bumacov said that when the common tax in agriculture is introduced, the average yield per hectare will be higher as, when taxation will not depend on the harvest, the farmers will honestly declare how much they collected. Of the 1.1 million tonnes of wheat, 65% are food wheat. Thus, the domestic market will be supplied with 350,000 tonnes and the other 300,000 tonnes will be exported. 400,000 tonnes is fodder wheat for the animal-breeding sector.

The minister added that the corn harvest this year is also very good. More than 1.4 million tonnes of grains are projected to be reaped. The sunflower crop is estimated at half a million tonnes, while the sugar beet yield at 1 million tonnes.
